The Lands Minister has announced that Cabinet has revoked Executive Instrument (EI) 144, as amended by EI 234, in a historic decision to preserve the Achimota Forest and maintain its status as a forest reserve.

Speaking during the government’s accountability series on Wednesday July 15, 2026, the Minister described the decision as a major milestone in Ghana’s efforts to protect the environment and safeguard one of Accra’s most important ecological assets.

“This is the only last man standing forest cover in Accra, and President Mahama is determined to protect it at all costs,” the Minister said.

He disclosed that Cabinet took the decision on June 24, 2026, to revoke the executive instruments, effectively ensuring that the Achimota Forest retains its original status as a protected forest reserve.

According to the Minister, the move will help preserve the forest as an ecological safety zone for Accra and its surrounding communities, especially at a time when rapid urban development continues to put pressure on green spaces within the capital.

“This is a very important decision in the forestry sector,” he said, emphasising the need to protect the remaining natural resources that contribute to environmental sustainability and the well-being of citizens.

The Achimota Forest, widely regarded as one of Accra’s last major forest covers, plays a critical role in supporting biodiversity, improving air quality, and helping to regulate the city’s environment.

For years, the future of the forest has attracted public attention, with environmental advocates and civil society organisations calling for stronger protection measures to prevent activities that could compromise its ecological importance.

The lands minister said the revocation of EI 144 and EI 234 demonstrates the government’s commitment to responsible land administration, environmental conservation, and the protection of Ghana’s natural heritage.

He added that President John Dramani Mahama remains committed to ensuring that the Achimota Forest is preserved for future generations and continues to serve as a vital environmental resource for Accra.

The announcement formed part of the government’s accountability series, which highlights key decisions and interventions across different sectors of the economy.
