Thousands of mourners from across Ghana gathered at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi on Thursday to observe the third-day (Adua) prayers for the late Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Naa Abubakari II, whose passing was officially announced on Monday, July 13, 2026.
The prayers, held in accordance with Islamic tradition, brought together traditional leaders, government officials, members of the royal family, and residents of Dagbon to offer special supplications for the peaceful repose of the late King’s soul.
The third-day observance marks an important stage in the funeral rites of the revered monarch and precedes the commencement of Dagbon’s customary succession process.
Speaking to the media, the Public Relations Officer of the Gbewaa Palace, Mr Musah, explained the significance of the ceremony and outlined the next stages of the funeral arrangements.
According to him, palace authorities are expected to announce the date for the seventh-day (Adua) prayers, which are likely to be held next week. The seventh-day prayers will be the final Islamic observance in honour of the late Ya-Naa.
After the final prayers, Dagbon’s traditional succession process will begin with the installation of a Regent, who will assume responsibility for the affairs of the kingdom while preparations continue for the late King’s final funeral rites.
Once the customary funeral ceremonies are completed, the process to select and enskin a new Ya-Naa will commence in accordance with the customs and traditions of Dagbon.
Many mourners paid glowing tributes to Ya-Naa Abubakari II, describing him as a peaceful, humble and unifying leader whose reign strengthened unity and stability within the kingdom.
They also offered prayers for the peaceful repose of his soul and appealed for continued peace and unity among the people of Dagbon as the kingdom embarks on the next phase of its traditional succession process.
