The chiefs and people of Salma in the Ellembelle District have warned the government not to restore the revoked mining lease of Adamus Resources Limited, saying any attempt to do so could trigger widespread unrest in the community.
At a press conference, the Tufuhene of Salma, Tufuhene Kubile, rejected media reports claiming that the youth of Salma wanted the company to return. He described the reports as false, misleading and not reflective of the views of the chiefs and the wider community.
According to the Tufuhene, about four months after the government revoked Adamus Resources’ mining lease, a group of individuals who previously benefited from the company’s operations issued a public statement calling for the company’s return without consulting the chiefs or the people of Salma.
He alleged that the group was acting in its own interest and had no authority to speak on behalf of the community.
Tufuhene Kubile further claimed that some of those behind the statement were involved in illegal mining activities and were pursuing personal interests.
He stressed that the chiefs and people of Salma remain firmly opposed to the return of Adamus Resources and appealed to the government to maintain its decision to revoke the company’s lease.
He warned that if the government restores the mining concession to Adamus Resources, the people of Salma will embark on a month-long demonstration to resist the move.
The chiefs, however, said they are ready to welcome any investor who will operate responsibly, respect the community and contribute to the area’s social and economic development. Community members at the press conference also backed the chiefs’ position and pledged their support.
