The Central North Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) has intensified its crackdown on the illegal use of sirens, emergency lights and other unauthorized vehicle accessories along the Assin Fosu–Cape Coast Highway.
The special enforcement exercise, carried out at Assin Fosu, led to the arrest of hundreds of drivers and motorcyclists found using unauthorized sirens, strobe lights, improvised headlamps, horns and road shoulders in violation of traffic regulations.
The operation forms part of efforts by the Central North Regional Police Command to improve road safety and ensure discipline among motorists.
Speaking to the media, the Central North Regional MTTD Commander, ASP Wonder Lumor, said the exercise targeted motorists who had illegally installed emergency lights and sirens without the required approval.
He said officers educated offenders on Regulations 65 and 74 of the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2180), after which the affected vehicles were impounded in line with the law.
All unauthorized sirens and emergency lights were removed, while the offenders were cautioned and issued warning letters.
ASP Lumor stressed that the exercise is part of an ongoing regional campaign to enforce road traffic laws and warned that similar operations would continue across the region. He urged motorists to obey traffic regulations and avoid practices that endanger the lives of other road users.
Some of the offenders admitted they had broken the law and appealed to the police for leniency. They also promised to comply with the road traffic regulations and refrain from using unauthorized sirens and emergency lights in the future.
