Thousands of people have gathered in Yendi for the enskinment of Kampakuya Naa Abukari Yakubu as the Regent of Dagbon today, Friday, July 31, 2026.
Kampakuya Naa Abukari Yakubu is the first surviving son of the late Ya-Na Abukari II. His enskinment is an important traditional step after the death of the Dagbon King and comes before the late king’s final funeral rites and the selection of a new Ya-Na.
The ceremony will take place at the Gbewaa Palace and is expected to attract traditional rulers, government officials, Members of Parliament, diplomats, security chiefs and other invited guests. Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is also expected to attend.
According to the programme, the Regent will be enskinned at 1:30 p.m. before being escorted to the durbar grounds. The event will include traditional greetings, speeches from traditional leaders and invited guests, and an address by President John Dramani Mahama.
Many residents who spoke ahead of the ceremony described it as an important event that will help maintain peace and stability in Dagbon. They urged everyone attending the ceremony to respect the customs and traditions of the kingdom.
Under Dagbon tradition, the first surviving son of a deceased Ya-Na is appointed Regent to oversee the affairs of the kingdom until the late king’s funeral rites are completed and a new Ya-Na is selected.
As Regent, Kampakuya Naa Abukari Yakubu will help manage the affairs of Dagbon, including overseeing traditional matters, until a new king is enskinned.
The ceremony marks another important stage in the traditional succession process of the Dagbon Kingdom.
