The Chief of Akyem Asamama, Osabarima Okoampah Amoa-Dekyem, has raised an alarm over the growing impact of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, warning that the practice is forcing many children to abandon their education in pursuit of quick money.
He cautioned that unless urgent action is taken by all stakeholders, the community could lose an entire generation of young people to illegal mining.
Speaking at a community durbar to officially introduce the newly installed Akwamuhene and Ankobeahene of Akyem Asamama, the Chief described galamsey as the community’s greatest challenge, citing its devastating effects on education and the future of its youth.
According to Osabarima Okoampah Amoa-Dekyem, many school-age children have dropped out of school to work at illegal mining sites in search of income.
He revealed that some girls leave school as early as the age of 12 and appealed to parents and guardians to pay greater attention to the upbringing and education of their children, especially the girl child, whose contribution will be crucial to the community’s future development.
The Chief also expressed concern over the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining, noting that abandoned galamsey pits have become death traps and continue to hinder farmers from accessing their farmlands.
He urged residents not to release land for mining without the knowledge and approval of the appropriate traditional authorities.
In addition, Osabarima Okoampah Amoa-Dekyem highlighted the growing problem of indiscipline among some commercial motorcycle (okada) riders. He said reckless riding has become a threat to public safety and has made it difficult for elderly residents to move around the community freely.
Meanwhile, the newly installed Akwamuhene of Akyem Asamama, Baffour Ofori Boateng Agyepong, and the Ankobeahene, Nana Nuamah Sarfo Twum, pledged their full support to the Chief and reaffirmed their commitment to working together to advance the development of the community.
