Former Majority Leader and former Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has called on the government to initiate a national dialogue involving all political parties and key national stakeholders to strengthen Ghana’s democracy.
Speaking to Atinka News’ Ebenezer Madugu after the “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration in Accra, he said the country needed a collective effort to restore civility in political discourse and discourage the growing culture of insults in public debate.
He argued that while offensive political comments should be discouraged, governments should be cautious about resorting to arrests over statements deemed offensive. Instead, he advocated broader national engagement to address the issue.
Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu also contended that some political actors who previously tolerated or benefited from harsh political rhetoric now appeared to be taking a different approach, a development he said should encourage reflection on the need for consistent democratic standards.
