The Tema Regional Police Command has intercepted a major consignment of cocaine worth an estimated 6.8 million US dollars, concealed in sacks of gari and allegedly destined for export through the Tema Port.
The Command also announced the seizure of four sacks containing a substance suspected to be cannabis in a separate intelligence-led operation at Tsopoli in the Greater Accra Region.
The details were disclosed by the Tema Regional Police Commander, DCOP Eric Asiedu Asamoah, at a press briefing in Tema.
Presenting the details of the cocaine seizure, Tema Regional Police Commander, DCOP Eric Asiedu Asamoah, said the operation was carried out on 5th August 2026 following credible intelligence received by the Command.
He explained that officers swiftly moved to the scene where three suspects, Inano Owin, a 31-year-old Dutch national, John Mensah Sabbah, aged 41, and Alhaji Idriss Haruna, aged 52, were allegedly loading sacks of gari into a shipping container mounted on a white DAF truck at the Tema Port.
A thorough search of the sacks led to the discovery of 876 wrapped parcels containing a white powdery substance suspected to be cocaine.
Police estimate the street value of the suspected narcotics at approximately 6.928 million US dollars, making it one of the major drug seizures recorded by the Command in recent times.
In a separate but related anti-narcotics operation, the Prampram District Police Command, also acting on intelligence on 5th August 2026, intercepted four sacks containing a substance suspected to be cannabis at Tsopoli.
According to the Police, the suspected narcotics were being transported from Akuse when officers moved in and retrieved the exhibits. One suspect, Eric Tetteh, has been arrested and is assisting investigators with the ongoing probe.
DCOP Eric Asiedu Asamoah disclosed that police have launched a manhunt for other suspects believed to have escaped during the operations.
Meanwhile, all suspects arrested in the two separate operations remain in police custody assisting with investigations. The recovered substances have been forwarded to the Police Forensic Science Laboratory for analysis and confirmation.
The Tema Regional Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying intelligence-led operations aimed at disrupting narcotics trafficking and preventing Ghana’s ports and road networks from being used as transit routes for illicit drugs.
