A heavy security presence has been deployed at Laboma Beach as authorities prepare for a major demolition exercise aimed at tackling persistent flooding in parts of Accra.
The operation, being led by the Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC), follows a series of recent interventions, including clean-up campaigns, drain desilting and demolitions carried out after the devastating June 29 floods that affected several communities across the capital.
Police and military personnel were stationed around the beach area on Friday, restricting access to sections of the enclave as officials coordinated preparations for the exercise.
The demolition is expected to target unauthorised structures within the area as authorities intensify efforts to restore natural drainage channels and reduce flooding risks, especially during the peak of the rainy season.
Authorities have repeatedly identified construction on waterways, wetlands and other unapproved locations as a major factor contributing to flooding.
They have warned that enforcement measures will continue in areas where such developments persist.
The Greater Accra Regional Security Council has maintained that the exercise is aimed at protecting lives and property while ensuring compliance with planning and environmental regulations.
