The Mion Constituency Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Sulaiman Abubakar, popularly known as “Shehu,” has resigned from his position with immediate effect.
In a letter dated Saturday, August 8, 2026, and addressed to the Northern Regional Chairman of the NPP, Mr. Abubakar formally announced his resignation as the party’s Mion Constituency Chairman.
Explaining his decision, Mr. Abubakar stated that his resignation was based on personal reasons.
“My resignation is personal,” he stated.
He expressed appreciation to the Council of Elders, patrons, polling station and electoral area executives, as well as the entire membership and supporters of the party in the constituency, for the confidence they reposed in him during his tenure.
Despite stepping down from the constituency chairmanship, Mr. Abubakar stressed that he remains a committed member of the NPP and will continue to contribute to the party’s efforts to regain political power in the 2028 general elections.
“I remain an ardent and good-standing member of the party and will continue to discharge my role as a member to ensure we recapture power in 2028,” he said.
The letter did not disclose any specific reason for his resignation beyond describing the decision as personal.
Mr. Abubakar’s resignation comes barely one month after he was declared the winner of the Mion Constituency NPP chairmanship election.
