An Economist, Dr. Peter Tekper, has called for state institutions with the capacity to generate enough revenue to finance their operations to become more self-sustaining.
Speaking on Bullet TV’s Morning Target with host Ebenezer De-Gaulle, Dr. Tekper said allowing such institutions to manage their finances and meet their operational costs would help reduce the pressure on Ghana’s Consolidated Fund.
“Many state institutions can manage themselves and pay their own costs. That would help reduce the pressure on the Consolidated Fund,” he said.
Dr. Tekper argued that institutions capable of generating sufficient revenue should be encouraged to become financially independent rather than relying heavily on government funding.
He said such a move could create fiscal space for government to channel limited public resources into other critical sectors and national development priorities.
His comments come amid ongoing discussions on improving the efficiency of state institutions, strengthening public-sector accountability and reducing the financial burden on government.
