The Chief Executive Officer of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has attributed the fatal accident on the Ofankor-Pokuase road to wrongful parking and speeding, rather than the absence of streetlights.
Speaking to the press at the accident scene on Thursday, August 13, the Accra Mayor said vehicles stopping along the stretch to pick up or drop off passengers were creating a serious danger for motorists, particularly around a curve.
He said he had used the road the previous night and observed vehicles parked along the road.
According to him, the situation leaves approaching drivers with little space to manoeuvre, increasing the risk of collisions.
He appealed to drivers and commercial transport operators to stop parking at the location and said the Assembly would install warning signs to prevent vehicles from stopping there.
The comments followed a multiple-vehicle crash on the Ofankor-Pokuase stretch that left 11 people dead and 13 others injured.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said the accident occurred at about 4:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 13, between the Ofankor Barrier and the John Teye enclave.
Seven vehicles were involved in the crash, including two tipper trucks, two Sprinter buses, two saloon cars and a tricycle. A total of 24 people were involved.
The 13 injured victims were taken to the Achimota Hospital for medical treatment.
The GNFS said rescue teams from the Amasaman Fire Station and its headquarters responded to the scene.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
