Senior officers of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) from the Agona Swedru Fire Station in the Central Region have undertaken an educational tour of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) to strengthen their preparedness for industrial fire emergencies.
The delegation, led by the Municipal Fire Commander, DOII Abdul Wasiu Hudu, was taken through various aspects of the refinery’s operations, with particular focus on safety protocols, emergency response systems and production processes.

The tour provided the officers with practical insight into the handling of hydrocarbons and the management of fire risks associated with refinery and other industrial operations.
Particular emphasis was placed on industrial fire management, given the specialised risks associated with petroleum products and other highly flammable materials.

The engagement formed part of efforts to deepen firefighters’ understanding of industrial environments and improve their ability to respond effectively to emergencies involving hydrocarbons.

The officers also gained knowledge of the systems and procedures in place at the refinery to prevent, detect and respond to potential emergencies.
The GNFS described the tour as valuable in enhancing the officers’ technical knowledge and operational preparedness, particularly in dealing with complex industrial fire incidents.

The experience is expected to contribute to improved coordination and response capabilities when firefighters are called upon to manage emergencies involving oil facilities and other high-risk industrial installations.
