GoldBod Is a Scandal in Waiting — Afenyo-Markin

Minority Leader in Parliament, Osahene Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has raised concerns about the operations of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), describing the state-owned institution as a “scandal in waiting.”

According to the Minority Leader, it is only a matter of time before issues surrounding the operations of GoldBod become a major concern for the country.

Speaking on Atinka TV’s Ghana Nie-Flagship, hosted by Nana Yaw Fianko, Mr Afenyo-Markin questioned the manner in which GoldBod is being managed and warned that the institution could eventually become embroiled in controversy.

“GoldBod is a scandal in waiting. It is just a matter of time,” he said.

His comments come amid growing political and public attention on the management of Ghana’s gold resources and the government’s efforts to restructure the country’s gold trading framework.

GoldBod was established as part of government’s strategy to centralise and strengthen the purchase, aggregation and marketing of gold produced in Ghana, particularly gold from the artisanal and small-scale mining sector.

The institution has subsequently assumed a more prominent role in the country’s gold trading and foreign exchange management framework.

However, Mr Afenyo-Markin’s remarks suggest concerns within the Minority about the transparency, accountability and sustainability of GoldBod’s operations.

Although he did not, in the statement provided, identify a specific transaction or activity as the basis for his warning, the Minority Leader’s comments point to broader concerns about how the institution is being administered and the potential risks associated with its operations.

The warning adds to the political scrutiny surrounding GoldBod as the government seeks to use Ghana’s gold resources to strengthen the country’s foreign exchange position and support economic stability.

Mr Afenyo-Markin is expected to provide further details on the concerns underlying his assertion as the debate over GoldBod and the management of Ghana’s gold resources continues.

The GoldBod initiative remains a significant component of the government’s economic strategy, particularly in relation to gold purchases, exports and the mobilisation of foreign exchange.

The Minority has, however, consistently called for greater transparency and accountability in the management of public resources and institutions.

Mr Afenyo-Markin’s latest comments are therefore likely to intensify calls for greater scrutiny of GoldBod’s operations and financial activities.

His description of the institution as a “scandal in waiting” also places pressure on the government and GoldBod’s management to demonstrate that the institution is operating within clear accountability and governance frameworks.

The comments were made during his appearance on Atinka TV’s Ghana Nie-Flagship, where he discussed issues relating to the government and the management of the country’s resources.
