Courier Riders Beg IGP to Investigate Alleged Extortion by Taskforce

A group of courier riders has appealed to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohonu, to investigate some police officers they accuse of working with a task force to extort money from them.

The group, led by Jonathan Apesse Afful, claims the officers and the task force have been demanding GH¢650 from each rider, allegedly for failing to obtain courier licences.

Mr Afful said the riders could not afford the amount and questioned the manner in which the money was being demanded.

He also alleged that the riders were given a code to use to register for the courier licence, but the code did not work.

According to him, the failure of the registration code has increased their suspicion about the exercise and the demand for money.

The riders are therefore calling on the IGP to investigate the matter and ensure that any enforcement of courier licensing is done through a clear and lawful process.

They also want the police administration to protect them from what they describe as harassment and alleged extortion while they work to earn a living.
