The Bono Regional Police Command has arrested a 36-year-old man, Gyamfi Christian, in connection with a suspected fake gold syndicate operating in the Berekum Municipality.
The arrest follows a complaint lodged by Christopher Awuni, 29, a gold aggregator, who reported that four men posing as gold sellers had sold him 110 troy ounces of gold for GH¢1.1 million in July 2026.
According to the Police, the gold was subsequently tested and found to be fake. The suspected fake gold has since been retained as an exhibit as investigations continue.
Following intelligence-led investigations, the Police arrested Gyamfi Christian on August 17, 2026, at his hideout in Wamfie in the Dormaa East District.
During interrogation, the suspect allegedly admitted his involvement in the transaction and told investigators that the deal took place at Drobo in the Jaman South Municipality.
The Police said Christian also identified three alleged accomplices, Abraham, alias “Frenchman,” described as the suspected leader of the group, as well as Isaac Antwi and Balthazar.
The three suspects are currently at large, with the Police indicating that efforts are underway to apprehend them.
Preliminary investigations have further revealed that the group is allegedly linked to another fake gold transaction in which a victim was defrauded of GH¢1.4 million in Drobo earlier this year.
Gyamfi Christian remains in Police custody and is assisting with investigations, while the Bono Regional Police Command continues efforts to arrest the remaining suspects.
The Police have urged members of the public to exercise caution when engaging in gold transactions and to report suspicious activities to the authorities.
