A total of 26 suspects has so far been put before the courts over election-related violence recorded during Ghana’s 2020 and 2024 general elections, Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak has disclosed.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, August 24, 2026, Mr Muntaka said one of the 26 suspects had since been discharged, while the remaining 25 were currently standing trial.
The update follows investigations initiated after President John Dramani Mahama directed a thorough and impartial probe into incidents of election-related violence during the 2020 and 2024 elections.
The Inspector General of Police subsequently established a special investigation task force under the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate the cases and pursue those responsible.
According to the Interior Minister, the task force has made further progress since its initial report was presented in November 2025.
Several cases involving deaths and injuries linked to political confrontations are currently before the courts, while police continue to pursue suspects who remain at large.
One of the cases involves the July 2020 killing of Silas Wolongkami at Banda Ahinkuro during a confrontation between supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Police investigations led to the arrest of several suspects, including Gabriel Eje, alias Abode, who was identified as the prime suspect in the stabbing.
He was arraigned before the Adabraka District Court on charges of conspiracy to commit murder and was later granted bail by the Accra High Court. He is expected to appear before the court again on August 31, 2026.
Another case concerns the December 2024 lynching of Jacob Nlo at Nkremu-Akumadan. Six suspects have so far been arrested in connection with that case and put before the court.
The police are also pursuing suspects in the Tolon Constituency shooting, where Shaibu Haruna was killed during an armed confrontation reportedly linked to allegations of vote buying.
The task force has also investigated the Ablekuma Central shooting during the 2020 elections, the Nkranza South shooting in 2024 and other incidents involving security personnel.
Mr Muntaka said the police would continue pursuing outstanding suspects and support the prosecution of those already before the courts.
He urged members of the public with information on suspects still at large to provide such information to the police.
The Minister said the government remained committed to ensuring that persons found responsible for election-related violence were held accountable under the law.
