Bogoso disaster: Gov’t will rebuild houses for affected residents -Bawumia

The Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has assured the public that Government will rehabilitate and rebuild houses that have been destroyed by the explosion at Apiate.

On Thursday, January 20th 2022, there was an explosion at Apiate, a town between Bogoso and Bawdie in the Western Region.

According to reports, a mining explosive vehicle moving from Tarkwa to Chirano mines collided with a motorcycle resulting in the explosion.

As a result, 13 persons were reported dead while more than 50 sustained injuries.

Due to this, a delegation led by Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the Interior Minister, Mr Ambrose Dery, the Inspector General of Police, George Akuffo Dampare, went to the scene to assess the situation and see best ways to support affected persons.

Speaking to the media and residents , Dr Mahamudu Bawumia noted that about 179 families have been affected by the disaster.

He indicated that almost 160 persons have been injured.

Meanwhile, he said Government will do everything to support the families of those who lost their lives.

For the injured, he said government will provide them with the best health care, saying some have been sent to Tarkwa, some to Kumasi while others will be sent to Accra to get the best healthcare.

He thanked the Ambulance Service, Fire Service, the Police, Armed Forces, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), residents that brought their excavators to help rescue the victims, and all other agencies that supported in carrying out the exercise.

For the rehabilitation and rebuilding of the affected houses, he said government will engage State Housing Corporation and Mining Companies in the communities in order to put in place facilities that would help those who have been displaced.

“For the houses that have been destroyed, we are already beginning to think about how to rehabilitate and rebuild for the community here. So I want to assure Nananom that His Excellency the President has given us directives, I have already spoken to the State Housing corporation and in consultation with the mining communities and companies around here, we will quickly try to put in place that will help those who have been displaced,” he said.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia expressed the government’s condolence to the families of those who lost their lives.

“It is a sad day for all of us,” he said.
