“Constitution must be reviewed”- Inusah Fuseini reacts to appointment of SC judges

Inusah Fuseini, a former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central and former Minister for Roads and Highways, has called for a review of Ghana’s Constitution.

This statement by the former lawmaker comes after President Akufo-Addo appointed a former parliamentary candidate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Justice Ernest Yao Gaewu and three other Justices to the Supreme Court.

Justice Gaewu, a former NPP Parliamentary Candidate in both the Ho West and Ho Central Constituencies was nominated together with the three to serve on the bench following pending vacancies on the Supreme Court later this year.

Until his appointment, Mr Gaewu was the Managing partner at Mawulorm Chambers, the prestigious Ho-based Law firm established by Justice Jones Victor Mawulorm Dotse, another Supreme Court Judge, when he was in active legal practice.

The other appointed Justices are Justice Barbara Frances Ackah-Yensu, Justice of Appeal, Justice George Kingsley Koomson, Justice of Appeal and Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu Asiedu, Justice of Appeal.

Reacting to the issue on Atinka FM’s AM Drive with sit-in host Nana Yaw Fianko (Mr Speaker), the former lawmaker, Inusah Fuseini called for a review of the portion of the constitution that gives the President the mandate to appoint Supreme Court Justices.

He stated that Akufo Addo is on record to have appointed the highest number of justices to the Apex Court of Ghana.

Inusah Fuseini argued that, although there is no cap on the number of judges a President can appoint, previous governments restrained themselves and appointed few judges to the Supreme Court.

“I think the constitution must be reviewed, this is because the current constitution is prone to abuse. Our President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is on record to have appointed the highest number of justices to the Apex Court of the land. Although there is no cap on the number of judges a President can appoint, previous governments restrained themselves and appointed only between 9 and 11 judges to the Supreme Court,” he added.
