The Public Health Emergency Response Management Team(PHERMT) of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has directed that the number of people who witness marriage ceremonies at their premises is cut down four.
Aside the bride and the groom, the four witnesses, according to the AMA includes two witnesses from the bride’s family and two from the groom’s side.
This in line with the President’s directive on measures to contain and prevent the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) in the country after Ghana recorded six cases.
“The conduct of marriages at the AMA City Hall have been limited to only the couples and witnesses (two from both the groom and the bride),” the AMA stated.
In a statement, the AMA has also suspended all public gatherings and programmes at the AMA City Hall until further notice.
The AMA, however, urged the public to call emergency lines immediately on (0509497700, 0558439868 or 0552222005) or visit the nearest health care centre should they experience symptoms.

PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES TO PREVENT THE SPREAD OF COVID-19 IN
ACCRA
In line with the President’s directive on measures to contain and prevent the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) in the country, the Public Health Emergency Response Management Team(PHERMT) of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) on Monday 16th March 2020 met to discuss the public health preparedness against COVID-19 pandemic for the Accra Metropolis and has rolled out the following precautionary measures which would be strictly monitored to ensure compliance:
- The conduct of marriages at the AMA City Hall have been limited to only the couples and witnesses (two from both the groom and the bride).
- All public gatherings and programmes at the AMA City Hall are suspended until further notice. Also, the Police has been directed to ensure strict compliance concerning public gatherings in the metropolis.
- All food vendors in the metropolis should provide handwashing facilities and observe hygienic standards per the Food Safety and Hygiene Bye-laws, 2017 of the Assembly.
- All public toilets in the metropolis have been directed to provide handwashing facilities at their entrances under acceptable sanitation standards as prescribed in the Sanitation Bye-law, 2017 of the Assembly.
- Drivers should endeavour to disinfect their vehicles (seat, door handle) using the bleach solution
(‘Parazone’) and provide handwashing facilities (‘veronica buckets’, liquid soaps, hand sanitizers)
- Intensification of public education on preventive measures in markets, communities as well as other public places by the Metro Information Services Department which commenced weeks ago.The Public Affairs Unit of AMA will provide daily updates through our social media handles and other information outlets.
The Assembly, therefore, entreats everyone to frequently wash their hands with soap under running water for 20 seconds, use hand sanitizers and cover your nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing.
