Joint C’ttee inaugurated to probe police-military fracas in Tamale

 

Following the horrendous clash between some personnel of the police and military in the Tamale Metropolis, Wednesday, May 16, 2018, leading to about eight personnel reportedly injured, the Minister of Interior, Ambrose Dery, has inaugurated a joint Police – Military Committee to investigate the unfortunate incident.

Reports indicate that the attack started after a soldier was arrested by the Police for assaulting his wife but he managed to escape and mobilized his colleagues for a reprisal attack. 

The soldiers after freeing their colleague were reported to have assaulted police personnel they came across in the Metropolis deployed to various duty posts and beaten them to the pulp. 

In March this year, one Constable Kwaku Duaah of the Tamale Regional Police Headquarters was subjected to severe beatings by angry soldiers.

The IGP and the Regional Security Council set up a committee to probe the incident. Its findings are yet to be released.

The nine-member committee is made up of Senior State Attorney, Madam Victoria Aseiduwaa as Chairmen as well as Air Commodore A.A Appiah, Col. Amponsah, Chief Warrant Officer Barker Ramous, DCOP D. Akrofi Asiedu (Rtd) from the GAF.

Others are Supt. Firmin Azitariga, Chief Supt. Benjamin Osei Addae, and one other person from to be appointed by the Police hierarchy. Meanwhile, Brig. General Kwame (red) Oppong-Kyekyeku form Retired Commissioned Officers Association.
 
Mr. Ambrose Dery, with the support from the Deputy Defence Minister and MP for Nkoranza North, noted that both agencies are supposed to operate within the confines of the law and be each other’s keeper.

The committee’s work begins immediately and is mandated to submit their findings or report by 31st August 2018. They are expected to unravel the causes of the clashes and come out with guidelines and protocols to ensure a collaborative spirit between the two agencies.
The committee is to set out appropriate recommendations beyond the existing protocols that will bring out effective Police/Military collaboration and strength camaraderie spirit between the Police and Military.

Furthermore, their terms of Reference are to investigate the immediate and remote cause of the 16th May 2018 incident.

Secondly, they are to investigate the cause of any other Police/Military clashes that have occurred within the next five years, any lessons learnt.

Thirdly, they must identify the effects of such clashes on Military/Police relationship and its effects on the community.
Again, they are to make recommendations for sanctions against those found culpable and appropriate compensation to deserving victims.

And to make appropriate recommendations on any other related matters.
