Nurse administers expired drip to patient at Ashaiman Polyclinic

A nurse at the Ashaiman Polyclinic has infused a patient (name withheld) with an expired intravenous fluid, worsening his condition.

The intravenous fluid expired in June 2017 according to our checks.

According to mother of the 17-year-old victim, her son was admitted to the health facility Thursday morning after complaining of fever. She noted that she left the boy at the hospital after they put the drip on him.

However, upon her return, the worried mother observed a sudden change in her son's condition and behavior. Her fears were confirmed after her son revealed to her that the intravenous fluid administered to him had expired.

"Mama, mama pray for me, do you know the drip put on me had expired?" the mother quoted her son. The mother immediately requested for fresh drip for child sensing danger.

It was later established that the nurse who administered the expired fluid to the boy had closed for the day.

The victim was in an unstable condition When Atinka FM’s Edward Sebbie visited him at the health facility last night (Thursday).

Asked whether she would opt for referral, the woman responded: “since they (Ashaiman Polyclinic) created the mess, they must be made to fix it and save her son.
