The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the World Food Programme (WFP) for the implementation of the Enhancement of Nutrient and Values Chains (ENVAC) project in Ghana.
Enhancement of Nutrient and Values Chains (ENVAC) is an integrated nutrition and agriculture project which is being implemented with funding from Canada. The agreement is expected to last for five years that is from 2017 to 2021.
Speaking at the signing ceremony in the Accra, Country Representative of the World Food Programme, Rukia Yacoub said the project is aimed at reducing stunting and micro-nutrient deficiencies through private sector-led approaches to agriculture by improving production of nutritious local staple foods by smallholder farmers.
She said it will also enhance industrial and community level agro-processing and increase consumption of nutritious foods by women and children to prevent stunting.
She noted that, under ENVAC, smallholder farmers in the five Regions-Ashanti, Brong-Ahafo, Northern Region, Upper East and Upper West will be encouraged to produce good quality maize and other cereals which they sell to two industrial food processors in the Ashanti and Brong-Ahafo Regions.
Chief Executive Officer of the Food and Drug Authority, Mimi Darko noted that the ceremony marks the beginning of a partnership between her outfit in making the Enhancement of Nutrient and Values Chain (ENVAC) project a success.
