The Government of Ghana has summoned the Acting High Commissioner of South Africa in Accra following reports of xenophobic incidents targeting foreign nationals, including Ghanaians.
In a press release issued on April 23, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ghana confirmed that Thando Dalamba was invited for urgent discussions with the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
According to the Ministry, the meeting was to formally convey Ghana’s “strong concern” over reported acts of intimidation and harassment, which have circulated widely in viral videos.
Concerns Over Treatment of Ghanaians
The Foreign Affairs Minister referenced a specific incident in KwaZulu-Natal, where a Ghanaian resident was allegedly confronted and asked to prove his legal status before being told to leave South Africa and “fix his country.”
Mr Ablakwa described such actions as unacceptable, noting that they undermine the dignity and rights of law-abiding individuals.
He further indicated that reports suggest rising tensions, with some foreign nationals being advised to remain indoors for safety. While no fatalities or injuries have been recorded in the current situation, the Minister warned of the need to prevent a repeat of past xenophobic attacks that resulted in deaths and destruction of property.
Call for Immediate Action
The Government of Ghana has formally protested the incidents and called on South African authorities to take immediate and decisive steps to ensure the safety of Ghanaian nationals.
These include swift intervention to de-escalate tensions, protect affected individuals, and provide firm assurances that such incidents will not recur.
Mr Ablakwa also highlighted the long-standing relationship between Ghana and South Africa, recalling Ghana’s support during the anti-apartheid struggle led by figures such as Kwame Nkrumah.
He stressed that xenophobic attacks contradict the principles of African unity and solidarity, urging citizens across the continent to promote peaceful coexistence.
South Africa Responds
In response, Mr Dalamba acknowledged the concerns raised and assured Ghanaian authorities that the South African government is actively addressing the situation.
He said law enforcement agencies are monitoring developments closely and taking steps to restore calm while holding perpetrators accountable.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Ghanaian citizens abroad and said it would continue engaging with relevant authorities to ensure their safety.
