GJA Elections Calendar Under Review Amid Petitions and Candidature Withdrawal

GJA Elections

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Elections Committee has announced that the current elections calendar for the upcoming national and regional elections, originally scheduled for Monday, June 30, 2025, is now under review.

This decision follows the receipt of several petitions challenging the eligibility of some candidates, as well as the unexpected withdrawal of a Vice-Chairmanship candidate in the Volta Region.

In a press release issued today, the Committee explained that the outcome of the vetting process, which was initially set to be released by Friday, has been delayed. The petitions received are currently under investigation, and the Committee is working to ensure that each concern is addressed thoroughly and fairly.

A key development in the elections process has also led to further changes: an aspirant for the position of Vice-Chairman in the Volta Region withdrew from the race just before the final stages. As a result, the Elections Committee has been forced to reopen nominations for the Volta Region Vice-Chairman position, with the nomination window set to run from Monday, June 9, 2025, for a period of seven calendar days.

In light of these developments, several critical electoral activities—such as the balloting for positions and other steps outlined in the original elections calendar—must now be revised. The Committee emphasized that this decision is necessary to ensure fairness, transparency, and strict adherence to the electoral guidelines set forth by the Association.

“We understand the inconvenience this may cause to our members, and we appreciate your patience as we address these issues,” said Peter Martey Agbeko, Chairman of the GJA Elections Committee.

“We assure all stakeholders that the review is being conducted with the utmost care, and a revised Elections Calendar will be published shortly.”

The Committee is working to resolve the ongoing issues in a timely manner, ensuring the integrity of the GJA electoral process remains intact. Members of the Association are encouraged to stay updated on developments as the revised election schedule is released.
