The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) will honour several individuals and institutions for their outstanding contributions to press freedom, media development and national progress at a special awards ceremony in Accra.
The event, which forms part of activities marking this year’s World Press Freedom Day celebration, will take place on June 6, 2026, at the Alisa Hotel in North Ridge. It will be held under the theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development and Security.”
President John Dramani Mahama will be represented by the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Sam Nartey George, as the Special Guest of Honour. The ceremony is expected to attract about 300 guests, including government officials, diplomats, media practitioners and development partners.
Among those to be honoured for promoting and protecting press freedom are Ghanaian diplomat Alhaji Abdul-Rahman Haruna Atta, lawyer and journalist Samson Lardy Anyenini, and the late Justice Kwame Afreh. The GJA will also recognise veteran journalists, media leaders and academics, including Sir Benedict Batabe Assorow, Ambassador Gina Blay, Kwabena Yeboah, Kofi Badu, Dr. Gamel Nasser Adam and Prof. Kofi Agyekum.

Other award recipients include Prof. Amin Alhassan, Prof. Omane Antwi, Kofi Totobi Quakyi, Beatrice Agyeman, Ken Ansah and Fada Dickson Narh for their contributions to media development and leadership. Institutions such as Graphic Communications Group Limited, The Catholic Standard, the Bank of Ghana, the Ghana News Agency and Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City Accra will also receive honours.
The Turkish Ambassador to Ghana, Hüseyin Güngör, will receive a Special Recognition Award for his support of the media and the GJA. The association said the event will celebrate journalism, media excellence and the important role of the press in strengthening democracy and national development.
