Gov’t to hold stakeholder meetings on RTI implementation – Oppong Nkrumah

Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah says government is set to hold stakeholder meetings on road maps towards the implementation of the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
President Akufo-Addo, on Tuesday, 21st May, 2019, gave assent to Right to Information Act which is effective January 2020.
In a short ceremony at event at Jubilee House, Akufo-Addo expressed his satisfaction in the fact the passing of the Act came into effect during his time as President, and in the time of the 7th Parliament.
“I want to congratulate the 7th Parliament for its courage, sense of responsibility and commitment to good governance in passing this significant piece of legislation,” the President added.
The purpose of the Act, as set out in its Preamble, is to provide for the implementation of the constitutional right to information held by any public institution, and to foster a culture of transparency and accountability in public affairs.
The President asked that the RTI act enhances the quality of governance in Ghana, and provide a critical tool in the fight against corruption in public life.
In an interview with Kaakyire Ofori Ayim on Atinka AM Drive, Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said that journalists will able to access information in all public institutions by January 2020.
According to him, the series of stakeholder meetings, which commences next Tuesday, will make available a road map which will outline all the necessary units, officers, digital outlets to make the RTI Act effective.
“From Today day till the 31st of December, there will be series of stakeholder meetings and engagements for an efficient RTI Act. Before January, government will make available a commission specifically for the RTI, information officers will readily available at the public places to assist people seeking information”, he added.
