The National Peace Council has condemned Member of Parliament for the Awutu Senya East constituency for firing warning shots at a registration center.
The Awutu Senya East MP admitted to firing warning shots at the Step to Christ polling center centre in the Awutu Senya East constituency during the ongoing registration exercise last Tuesday.
Justifying her actions, the law maker said she although she carried the gun to the polling center to protect herself, the warning shot was as a result of how threatened she felt her life was.
After the act, groups and institutions including the National Peace Council have condemned and has asked the ruling NPP to mete out sanctions to Hawa Koomson.
Speaking in an interview on Atinka FM’s AM Drive with host Ekourba Gyasi, Peace Council Secretary said the council is a neutral body which will continue to be firm and not take sides in situations.
The National Peace Council has called on the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to institute disciplinary action against the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East Hawa Koomson for bringing the name of the party into disrepute.
The council has also called on the Member of Parliament to resign as Deputy Minister for Special Development Initiatives while investigations into the shooting is still ongoing.
First Deputy Majority Chief Whip, Mathew Nyindam, who holds a contrary view says although the act by the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East is condemnable, the Police should be left to do their job.
“No one condones the act, it is condemnable and there are no two ways about that. She has admitted to firing warning shots citing that her life was in danger, but that is why the Police Service was instituted. If the Police service is there and they have the right to investigate such issues, why would someone say that just because she is a Member of Parliament she should be summoned to the Privileges Committee?”, he added.
