The Head of Census Methodology at the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), Mr Owusu Kagya says the service expects to cover all Ghanaians in the ongoing population census at the end of July 18.

The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) extended the deadline for the 2021 Population and Housing Census to Sunday, July 18.

This is to allow enumerators complete work in the outstanding enumeration areas.

The exercise, which started on Monday, June 28, was expected to end today, July 11, 2021, in all sixteen (16) regions of the country.

Speaking on Atinka TV’s morning show, Ghana Nie with Co Host Abena Dufie Adjepong, Mr Owusu Kagya said they could not count everyone due to some challenges, stating that the GSS has put in place measures to ensure that all Ghanaians are enumerated at the end of July 18.

He said one of the challenges confronting the census was that it was difficult getting some people on weekdays .

Their new strategy, he said is to deploy enough enumerators to go out on weekends in order to enumerate those who have not been counted.
Mr Owusu Kagya also said it was illegal for the enumerators to leave their contact or note in the absence of the people.

According to him, the enumerators had been trained and advised to ensure that they meet the people and take their details, saying it was criminal for them to leave their cards in the absence of the people requesting for their info.

The country has so far conducted five post-independent population censuses in 1960, 1970, 1984, 2000 and 2010 with the last two consisting of both a population census and a housing census making the 2021 PHC the third Population and Housing Census to be conducted in Ghana. The 2021 PHC is designed to generate statistics that are essential for policy and planning purposes.
