IDEG launches election situation room to ensure credible 2024 elections

The Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), in collaboration with the Civic Forum Initiative (CFI), has launched the National Civil Society Election Situation Room to oversee the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections. The initiative aims to promote peaceful, transparent, and credible elections by leveraging civil society’s vital role in monitoring and addressing political and security challenges.

Speaking at the launch, Executive Director of IDEG, Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey, emphasized the need for a streamlined and coordinated approach to managing election-related information. “With the growing number of situation rooms, it is critical to establish a clearing house to verify and process information before forwarding it to relevant authorities, such as the police or other state agencies,” he said.

Since its inception in 2008, the Civil Society Election Situation Room has played a pivotal role in ensuring peaceful elections. Dr. Akwetey noted that this year’s operation would focus on reducing duplication and misinformation, which could jeopardize the electoral process. He stressed the importance of training and implementing a code of conduct for those involved in managing and disseminating election-related information.

“We cannot afford to compete in spreading unverified information. Election periods are highly emotional, and misinformation can have severe consequences. It is crucial that all data shared is credible and contributes to the common good,” Dr. Akwetey stated.

Dr. Akwetey also highlighted the need for collaboration between civil society organizations, security agencies, and other stakeholders. He underscored the importance of ensuring the safety and welfare of observers and personnel working on the ground, particularly in high-risk areas.

The IDEG-CFI Election Situation Room will work closely with NGOs, CSOs, security forces, and other partners to monitor electoral activities, verify reports, and address emerging issues promptly. The initiative seeks to bolster Ghana’s democratic integrity and maintain public trust in the electoral process.

As the 2024 elections draw closer, the IDEG’s efforts signal a strong commitment to fostering a peaceful and credible democratic exercise in Ghana.
