May Day: PUWU vows to resist ECG Privatisation

The Public Utilities Workers’ Union (PUWU) has vowed to resist any attempt to privatise the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Speaking at a May Day event, PUWU General Secretary, Timothy Nyame, said workers will oppose plans to place the state power distributor under private control.

The event was held under the theme “Unity and Resilience – Defending Public Utilities and Workers’ Rights.”

Mr Nyame praised ECG workers for their dedication, especially in keeping electricity supply stable despite challenges.

He said their efforts have supported homes, hospitals, schools and businesses across the country.

He also pointed to improvements within ECG, saying reforms by management and staff have increased revenue and reduced system losses.

According to him, these gains show that a state-owned company can perform well without privatisation.

However, Mr Nyame expressed concern about pressure from institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank pushing for ECG to be privatised.

He warned that any such move would go against earlier assurances by former President John Dramani Mahama that ECG would remain a public institution.

“We will resist every attempt to privatise ECG, whether in part or whole,” he said.

Mr Nyame added that electricity is a key national service and must remain under public control.

He called on workers to stay united and protect ECG, stressing that public utilities should serve the people and remain accountable to the state.

The statement was part of activities marking May Day, celebrated every year on May 1 to honour workers and their contributions to national development.
