Minority committed to defending press freedom – Jerry Ahmed

Jerry Ahmed

The Deputy Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib Esq., says the Minority Caucus in Parliament remains committed to defending press freedom and supporting digital media practitioners.

He made this known at the maiden Digital Media Creators Networking and Capacity Building Conference organised by 1957 News.

Mr. Shaib said media and digital communication now play a key role in shaping public opinion, civic trust and national unity. According to him, every post, broadcast and headline carries influence in today’s digital age.

He urged journalists and content creators to act responsibly and prioritise truth in their work. He stressed that freedom of expression must go hand in hand with responsibility.

The MP expressed concern over the growing use of insulting and inflammatory language in public discussions, warning that such conduct weakens democratic development.

He also cautioned against the spread of misinformation, noting that digital platforms can easily amplify falsehoods if not properly managed.

Mr. Shaib encouraged media practitioners to verify information, correct errors and be transparent about any bias in their reporting.

On governance, he raised concerns about the alleged misuse of state institutions to intimidate political opponents, journalists and critics, stressing that democracy thrives when the rule of law is applied fairly.

He called for stronger collaboration between Parliament, the media and digital creators to promote responsible communication.

Mr. Shaib concluded by urging stakeholders to ensure that media content promotes truth, respect and national development.
