The Council of Elders of the National Democratic Congress has directed all party members and groups to immediately cease any form of premature presidential campaigning ahead of the party’s next flagbearer election.
In a statement issued on May 29, 2026, following a meeting with John Dramani Mahama, the Council said it had observed growing concerns within the party and the wider public regarding reports of early presidential campaign activities by individuals and interest groups.
The Council emphasized that the NDC’s current priority is supporting the government’s national reconstruction and development agenda rather than engaging in activities that could create division, distraction, or internal competition.
Citing Article 42 of the party’s constitution, the Council noted that the National Executive Committee (NEC) is responsible for determining the date and venue for the election of a presidential candidate.
It stressed that until the appropriate constitutional processes are activated and official guidelines are announced, no individual, group, or bloc is authorized to undertake or promote any presidential campaign, directly or indirectly.
The statement further instructed all persons involved in such activities to stop immediately, including mobilization efforts, endorsements, publicity campaigns, and related actions aimed at advancing the ambitions of prospective candidates.
The Council of Elders also urged party members to remain united and focused on supporting the Mahama administration’s agenda, saying the collective responsibility of members is to help deliver on the expectations of Ghanaians.
The statement concluded with a call for party cohesion, discipline, and commitment to the government’s transformation programme, warning against actions that could undermine the NDC’s unity and effectiveness.
