Police Launch Manhunt After Deadly Highway Robbery at Ahyiresu

The Ghana Police Service, through the Ashanti Regional Command, has launched a manhunt for suspected armed robbers following a deadly attack along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso road in the Ashanti Region.
According to a press release issued by the Police Public Affairs Unit in Kumasi, the incident occurred on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at about 10:30 p.m. in the Nyinahin District.

Attack on Football Team Bus

Police reports indicate that a VIP bus carrying about 30 football players and officials of Berekum Chelsea was attacked while travelling from Samreboi to Berekum.
The bus reportedly veered off the road and skidded into a bush as the driver attempted to escape from six armed men, three of whom were said to be wielding pump-action guns.

Fatality and Robbery

During the attack, a footballer identified as Dominic Frimpong sustained gunshot wounds. He was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital but later died while receiving treatment.
Another victim, George Owusu Afriyie, 52, was robbed of GHS 4,500. Police also retrieved two spent BB cartridges from the scene to aid ongoing investigations.

Ongoing Police Operation

The Regional Police Command has since deployed additional personnel and crime scene experts to the area as part of efforts to track down and arrest the suspects. Authorities have assured the public that the perpetrators will be apprehended as investigations continue.

The Police have urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement while maintaining confidence in ongoing security operations.
