Bekwai: NPP chair allegedly prevents aspirant from picking nomination forms

Lawyer Kwasi Amofa Agyemang, a parliamentary aspirant hopeful in the Bekwai constituency in the Ashanti Region has accused his party chairman of deliberately denying him access to  nomination forms.
The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) opened nominations for its upcoming presidential and parliamentary primaries ahead of the 2020 general elections. The primaries is scheduled for April 25, 2020.
Persons vying for the presidential position are required to pay GH¢200,000 as filing fees, and a non-refundable application fee of GH¢20,000 for nomination forms.
“A Presidential Vetting Committee (PVC) shall be established to examine and vet the candidature of every aspirant for the presidential nomination of the party to ensure that such person qualifies to contest for the office of the President of the Republic,” a statement from the party said.
However, it appears some candidates are being denied access to purchase nomination forms.
That, according to some candidates, is a strategy by some party constituency chairmen to allow only incumbent Members of Parliament purchase the forms.
Speaking to Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive, Personal Assistant to the aspirant, lawyer Kwasi Amofa Agyemang, whose name was given as Seth Amoako  alleged that the delay by the Bekwai party chairman is just a ploy to allow only Joseph Osei Owusu, the incumbent MP to contest the elections.
Lawyer George Darko, an aspirant in Suame Constituency, who is yet to pick his forms, said he was told Suame is yet to receive nomination forms even though the party’s General Secretary says otherwise.
Asked if any prospective candidate has been able to pick his or her forms, George Darko responded in the negative.
Meanwhile the Director of Research Elections ruling National Patriotic Party (NPP), Evans Nimako, has asked prospective parliamentary aspirants in the party’s impending primaries to direct complaints to the appropriate quarters and not the media.
