First Lady had to return allowances for her peace- MP

The Member of Parliament for Akyem Oda Constituency in the Eastern Region, Mr Alexander Akwasi Acquah says the First Lady, Mrs Rebecca Akufo Addo will now enjoy her peace after rejecting and refunding all allowances given her from 2017.

The First Lady declined the offer for her to be paid allowances and as well decided to refund all monies paid to her as allowances from the date of the President’s assumption of office, i.e., from January 2017 to date, amounting to GH¢899,097.84.

Her decision was informed by some extremely negative opinions being expressed by some Ghanaians in the raging debate on emoluments for First and Second Ladies.

In a latest development, the Second Lady, has also followed suit by rejected her allowing and returning the ones she had already taken since 2017.

Speaking on Atinka TV’s morning show, Ghana Nie, hosted by Ekourba Gyasi Simpremu, Mr Alexander Akwasi Acquah was of the belief that the First and Second Ladies might have had their private businesses but because of their position, they had to sacrifice and support their husbands.

Although he said it was painful to have returned the money, he said the public’s insult and ridicule forced Mrs Akufo Addo to return her allowances.

“It is because of the plenty talk that is why she returned the. If it something which is already existing and they want to formalize and people are talking, it is better to return it,” he said.

The MP also said even if the First lady needed the money and people are talking plenty, then she had to reject and return it to have her peace to support her husband.
