Chiefs and residents of Anweam, Accra New Town, Kwae, and James Town have strongly voiced their opposition to any form of mining activities in their communities.
The concerned citizens are calling on the government to intervene and prevent both legal and illegal miners from operating in the area.
At a press conference, the traditional leaders and residents expressed fears that mining operations could lead to the destruction of their farmlands and local water bodies, which are vital to their livelihoods.
These communities, located in the Kwaebibirem District, are primarily agrarian, cultivating palm, cocoa, and various food crops.
Speaking at the event, the Odikro of Accra New Town, Nana Kwasi Bortey, revealed that there are reports of an impending mining operation by a yet-to-be-named company.
He noted that existing agricultural lands are already under pressure, with companies like GOPDC having acquired large tracts for palm plantations.
Other residents and opinion leaders echoed similar sentiments, stressing that the land is their only source of income.
They warned that any attempt to initiate mining activities would be met with strong resistance from the community.
The chiefs and residents are urging the government, environmental agencies, and stakeholders to take immediate steps to protect their lands from exploitation.
