Traditional leaders in the Sampa Traditional Area have appealed for calm and respect for the rule of law as tensions persist over a long-standing chieftaincy dispute in the town.
At a press briefing, elders said the community’s peace must be protected given Sampa’s importance as the capital of the Jaman North District and a key trading centre, particularly in the cashew industry and cross-border commerce with Côte d’Ivoire.
According to the elders, the succession dispute over the paramount stool underwent years of mediation and customary processes under the authority of the Asante overlord, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. Following the process, Nana Samgba Gyaflaa II was nominated by the Afia Takyiwaa royal family and later gazette in accordance with Ghana’s chieftaincy laws.

However, the leaders said disagreements surrounding the issue have created tension within the community and raised concerns about the potential for renewed disturbances.
They called on all parties to remain calm and allow legal and traditional processes to address outstanding matters. The elders also urged authorities to ensure respect for court directives and to investigate any incidents of violence linked to the dispute.
Emphasising the need to avoid further conflict, the leaders appealed to the government and security agencies to help safeguard peace in the town.
“Our foremost concern is the peace and stability of Sampa,” the statement said.
The statement was signed by Nana Kwadwo Magsah Kokoahene, Adontehene of the Sampa Traditional Council, and Nana Abu Srigbo, Abusuapanin of the Afia Takyiwaa Royal Family.
