Supporting STEM Dreams: Elizabeth Girlchild Edu. Foundation Uplifts Marginalized Girls in Effutu

A group of young alumni of the University of Education, Winneba, have established the Elizabeth Girlchild Education Foundation (EGEF) to support the education of marginalized girls in Effutu and beyond.

The foundation, founded in 2019 and located at Descardo Down in Winneba, was inspired by the desire of the former students to give back to society. Its mission is to provide academic and material support to underprivileged girls, particularly those in the Central and Northern regions, and to encourage them to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

The foundation’s support covers school fees, uniforms, books, bags, transportation, feeding fees, Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) dues, printing costs, and sanitary pads. According to the foundation, such interventions have kept many girls in school and given them hope of aspiring to careers that were previously considered out of reach.

In an interview with Winneba based Radio Windy Bay,  the organizer of the foundation, Mr. Seth Addo, said the initiative had already benefited several girls, but financial challenges were limiting their ability to reach more communities.

“We are passionate about helping these girls, but financial constraints make it difficult to sustain the support,” he noted.

He therefore appealed to corporate Ghana, philanthropic institutions, and benevolent individuals to support the foundation’s work.

Since its inception, the Elizabeth Girlchild Education Foundation has become a source of relief for many families, offering hope that with collective effort, more girls will be able to access and complete their education.
