UCC emerges champions of AU games in Egypt

 

University of Cape Coast (UCC) emerged  winner of the maiden African Universities Games held in Cairo, Egypt.

On the 12th of March, UCC athletics team departed to Cairo Egypt with 17 athletes to compete in the maiden edition of African Universities Olympic Games.

The competition attracted several Universities across Africa, 47 universities from 27 countries including 3 universities from Ghana -University for Development Studies (UDS), University of Ghana  and UCC.

The competition which began on the 15th of March 2018 attracted several Universities across Africa competing in the various sporting disciplines for the grand prize and bragging rights.

The competition is aimed at fostering unity among the African continent by creating a cordial relationship between the youth.

UCC's team was led by Prof. Dora Adu Buandoh, Pro Vice Chancellor of UCC, the head coach of UCC's team Timothy Mensah and former Ghanaian athlete Margaret Simpson, who is also a student of the school.

The competition came to an end on 18th of March 2019 and team UCC emerged overall champion of the competition, sweeping a mouthwatering 10 gold, 7 silver, and 8 bronze medals.

Team UCC was declared winner of male and female athletic events making them the best team of the tournament.

The host team, University of Egypt, placed second with 3 gold medals. University of Ghana  and University of Development Studies (Ghana) won 3 and 4 medals with cash prizes respectively.
