UN Editor Gifts Land to Wode Maya for Promoting Volta Region to the World

The Volta Region is basking in a new wave of positive attention, thanks to renowned Ghanaian YouTuber and digital media influencer, Berthold Kobby Winkler Ackon, popularly known as Wode Maya. Following his recent spotlight on the region’s beauty and hospitality, his efforts have earned him an unexpected — and deeply symbolic — reward: a gift of land.

Ben Dotsei Malor, a former Deputy Editor at the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and Chief Editor at UN News, well known on Ghana as Uncle Ben, has offered Wode Maya plots of land in his hometown, Ohawu – Ketu North, in appreciation of his role in promoting the Volta Region to the world.

This generous gesture followed a playful post by Wode Maya, in which he jokingly asked the people of Volta to “pay” him with dinner for the good publicity.

“To the beautiful people of Volta, it’s time to pay me. One man thousand for dinner won’t be bad,” – he quipped.

In a heartfelt post on Facebook, the respected Uncle Ben wrote:

“Bro Wodemaya: don’t you deserve more than just dinner? I’m offering you some plots of land in my village/ hometown Ohawu. How about that! SERIOUSLY.”

But what began as light-hearted banter has turned into a genuine expression of gratitude — and a symbol of how storytelling and digital influence can drive recognition and regional pride.

The Volta Region, stretching from lush highlands to the calm shores of Lake Volta, is fast becoming one of Africa’s must-visit tourist destinations — and not without reason.

From the majestic Wli Waterfalls, the highest in West Africa, to the tranquil sands of Keta Beach and the sacred grooves of the Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary, the region is a treasure trove of natural beauty.

Add to that the Amedzofe mountain views, the green canopies of the Avatime Hills, and the dramatic landscapes of the Afadjato, Ghana’s highest peak, and it’s clear why Wode Maya’s lens found plenty to celebrate.

Uncle Ben Dotsei Malor’s land offer is more than just a personal gesture; it is a symbol of how local appreciation and global recognition can intersect to build pride, promote tourism, and celebrate African excellence.

In a world where content is king, Wode Maya continues to prove that one creator, with one camera and a passion for storytelling, can indeed influence a thousand — or more.
