Wontumi’s Lawyer Pleads to “Stay Out of Politics” Amid EOCO Bail Drama

In a dramatic turn of events surrounding the arrest of Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, his lawyer, Andy Appiah Kubi, has pleaded to be excused from political commentary, stressing his commitment to the legal process over political spin.

“I beg you, I will stay out of the politics at the theatre and do the work within the law,” Appiah Kubi said during an interview on Friday.

Chairman Wontumi was picked up earlier this week by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over alleged financial irregularities. He has since been granted bail to the tune of GHS 50 million, with strict conditions attached.

Despite earlier hopes that he would be released today, efforts to meet the bail requirements were thwarted by what Appiah Kubi described as an unexpected legal challenge.

Former Vice President and NPP Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, made an unannounced appearance at EOCO headquarters to assist in the bail process but was unable to complete the effort due to the complications.

Health concerns were also addressed, with Appiah Kubi assuring the public that Chairman Wontumi is “fine” and receiving adequate medical attention.

In the meantime, documents supporting the bail, including property guarantees, have been submitted with help from Former Food and Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong, who reportedly went “above and beyond” to support the process.

The bail process is now expected to resume on Monday, pending the withdrawal of the legal application currently stalling Wontumi’s release.

Until then, Wontumi remains in EOCO and NIB custody, as political observers and party faithful watch closely.
