New Patriotic Party (NPP) national chairman aspirant Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has pledged to unite and rebuild the party as he seeks the party’s national chairmanship ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Speaking during a live interview on Movement TV, as part of his campaign for the position, Chairman Wontumi said his political career had been shaped by resilience, loyalty and electoral success.
“I have never had the luxury of an easy election,” he said. “Every battle has been hard fought. But those trials did not break me. They built me.”

Wontumi pointed to his rise through the party ranks, from constituency-level politics to serving three consecutive terms as Ashanti Regional Chairman, a position he said had allowed him to help strengthen the party in one of its key electoral strongholds.
The chairman aspirant argued that the NPP’s immediate need was practical leadership capable of winning elections rather than rhetoric.
“We don’t need more polished English. We need a working chairman,” he said. “The NPP has no shortage of elites and eloquent speakers. I am here to deliver results.”
As part of his campaign platform, Wontumi outlined four priorities if elected national chairman: unifying the party, strengthening grassroots structures, leading the NPP to victory in 2028 behind presidential candidate hopeful Mahamudu Bawumia, and creating more opportunities for young party activists.
He also addressed ongoing legal proceedings involving him, insisting that the challenges would not prevent him from serving the party.
“My legal challenges do not disqualify me from serving. I respect the law. I believe in due process,” he said, adding that he remained confident in the judicial process.
The NPP is seeking to reorganise and strengthen its structures following its defeat in Ghana’s 2024 general election, with internal discussions already focusing on leadership, party unity and preparations for the next electoral cycle.
Wontumi said his bid was driven by a commitment to service and grassroots engagement. “I’m not asking to be served. I’m asking to serve. I will be a working chairman,” he said.
The contest for the NPP national chairmanship is expected to form a key part of the party’s efforts to rebuild ahead of the 2028 elections.
