Enforce policies to protect water bodies- Amb. Samuel Owusu to Govt

Water Bodies

The United Nations (UN) Eminent Peace Ambassador to Ghana, Dr Samuel Ben Owusu has called on the Government to enforce policies that would help protect water bodies in the country.

He observed that numerous water bodies in Ghana have been polluted by human activities such as galamsey, the disposal of refuse, the construction of structures in waterways, and the obstruction of waterways.

The above, he noticed, has become a threat to Ghana’s water, expressing worry that if care is not taken, Ghana may import water or buy water at a very high price in future.

The UN Peace Ambassador gave the warning after his return from the United Nations Global Water Sustainable Conference held in New York.

The United Nations Global Water Sustainable Conference was a three-day event held from March 22nd to March 24th, 2023 in New York

It was aimed at reaffirming the international agreed water-related goals and targets including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Amb. Dr Samuel Owusu represented the West African Mission of the International Association of World Peace Advocate and Ghana respectively.

Right when he returned to Ghana, he spoke with the media at the Kotoka International Airport where he expressed worry over the matter.

He observed that most politicians were behind illegal mining directly or indirectly.

For those who engage in activities that pollute water, bodies he warned them to put a stop to it, stating that they will also be affected in future

Meanwhile, as the General Overseer of The Pottersville Church International, Covenant Christian Leadership College, Dr Samuel Ben Owusu said he was going to use his platform to educate the public on the need to protect water in the country.

He also said he would assist the government with ideas and the knowledge gained on innovations at the conference in order to promote a sustainable developed water system in the country.

We can’t cook with GHC0.97 anymore – Sch. Feeding caterers tell Gov’t

programme

Caterers of the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP) want urgent increment in the feeding grant, insisting that the amount being allocated by the Government to prepare daily nutritious meals for pupils is woefully insignificant.

According to them, the GHC1.00 is not enough to purchase food items on the market to prepare quality meals and serve in the right quantity for the children, most of whom come to school on empty stomach.

They disclosed that an amount of GHC0.03 is even deducted from source as tax component from each of the GHC1.00 paid to them [caterers].
This implies that the caterers do not receive exactly the GHC1.00, but GHC0.97 per child per day.

Some of the caterers in the Bono East Region complained bitterly to some officials of the Ghana School Feeding Programme and the World Food Programme who had come to the region for a weeklong joint monitoring to assess the performance of the caterers and the impact of the school feeding programme.

The distraught caterers even though appreciated the Government for the introduction of the school feeding programme and the great impact it is making in the lives of millions of Ghanaian children in the deprived schools, they disclosed how it is sometimes inconveniencing most of them.

“We have tried so much to be quiet over the years hoping that something will be done to increase the feeding grant to at least GHC2.00 or GhC2.50 so that we can meet the cost of food items on the market but to no avail. We are crying and crying but nobody seems to hear us out. Prices of items are being increased almost every day, and so the President must know that we cannot go to the market with the same GHc1.00”.

The caterers asserted that a bag of beans which was sold between GhC250.00 and GhC300.00 last year, now sells between GhC800.00 and GhC950.00. A bowl of gari has also moved from GhC6.00 to GhC25.00, a maxi bag of local rice moved from GhC200.00 to GhC450.00 and prices of cooking oil, meat, fish and vegetables have also gone up astronomically especially in the last 6 months.

They indicated that, even though it is a policy direction for all the caterers to patronize locally produced foodstuffs from the local farmers, almost all the caterers prefer the imported foods because they are far cheaper.

The caterers said that some of them are still managing to cook for the school children because the imported food suppliers are always willing to supply food and other items like tin tomatoes, cooking oil and canned fish to them on credit, unlike the local farmers.

They also raised serious concern about the long delay in the payment of their arrears by the government, which they indicated, put them under unnecessary pressure.

“We are supposed to pre-finance the cooking for just one term and receive payment the following term. But for a long time now, the government always fails to pay us on time; and most at times we do not receive our payment in full. Sometimes instead of 66 cooking days’ arrears, the government can decide to pay us 20, 25 or 30 days and we will have to struggle for a long time before we will receive the remaining payments. And because we have to pay our cooks and suppliers at all cost, we always have to go and borrow from different sources, which put us in an uncomfortable situation”.

In reaction to the concerns raised by the caterers, the GSFP National Coordinator Mrs. Gertrude Quashigah appealed to the caterers to calm down and exercise restraint, noting that everything is being done towards the upwards adjustment of the feeding grant.

She said management of GSFP has been engaging the government for a while now on the issue. According to her, the GSFP has submitted a compelling proposal to the government through the supervisory ministry for an upward adjustment of the feeding grant.

Mrs. Quashigah further revealed that between GHC2.00 and GHC3.00 has been proposed taken into account the prevailing economic trend in the country. She expressed optimism that government would respond positively to the proposal.
She recalled that in 2018 government accepted GSFP’s proposal and increased the feeding grant from GHp.80 to GHC1.00. She therefore assured the caterers and Ghanaians in general that government is genuinely committed to the sustainability of the programme.

Akufo-Addo grants presidential pardon to Abuga Pele over ill-health

The former Member of Parliament for Chiana/Paga, Abuga Pele, has received a presidential pardon.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo granted the presidential pardon to him on grounds of ill-health.

It is reported that last month, Abuga Pele was taken ill at the Nsawam Maximum Security Prison, from where he was transferred to the Greater Accra Regional Hospital.

He was admitted at the High Dependency Unit (HDU) of the hospital but has since been discharged, the report said.

Abuga Pele, who was an MP for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was sentenced to a six-year imprisonment by an Accra High Court in 2018.

The court found him guilty of causing financial loss to the state while serving as the National Coordinator of the defunct Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency (GYEEDA).

Afenyo-Markin Accuses Prez Mahama of Plotting Third Term with Supreme Court Nominees

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has launched a scathing attack on the President, accusing him of attempting to pack the Supreme Court in a bid to lay the foundation for a third term agenda—a move he describes as a direct threat to Ghana’s democracy and judicial independence.

Addressing journalists at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Headquarters, where the party officially announced the ‘Save The Judiciary Demo’ scheduled for Monday, May 5, Afenyo-Markin alleged that the President’s nomination of seven new justices to the Supreme Court was not just politically motivated, but a calculated attempt to capture the judiciary.

“It is obvious that the bold attempt by Mr. President to nominate, out of the blue, seven judges to the Supreme Court is a fast-track strategy for a third term agenda,”- he declared.

“He’s doing this through the advice of the hawks of the NDC, aiming to pack the court and clear the path for unconstitutional leadership extension.”

The Minority Leader, flanked by fellow MPs , Political Parties and civil society sympathizers, said the demonstration is not about partisanship, but about defending the soul of the Constitution and protecting institutional integrity.

“This is not Parliament’s fight. This is a fight for every citizen who believes in the rule of law and the supremacy of the Constitution. Power may change hands, but the Constitution must always stand,”- he said.

Afenyo-Markin questioned the sudden shift by the ruling government, referencing past criticism of similar judicial appointments by opposition members.

The demonstration, he stressed, will be peaceful but firm, beginning at 5:00 AM on Monday, May 5.

Protesters are expected to march in defense of judicial independence and demand transparency and restraint in the current government’s dealings with the judiciary.

He warned of the consequences of political overreach, stating that “retaliatory politics” will only deepen divisions in Ghana’s democratic fabric.

The ‘Save The Judiciary Demo’ is expected to draw large crowds, including legal minds, civil society groups, political actors, and concerned citizens.

Di Asa Queens Storm Accra with Electrifying Vibes Ahead of Season 9 Launch

Screenshot

Accra is on fire — not with traffic or protest — but with rhythm, joy, and purpose, as the Di Asa Float blazed through the capital in spectacular fashion today.

The vibrant parade, which kicked off from the Tobinco Media Group premises, brought a carnival-like atmosphere to the streets as former Di Asa queens, dancers, brass bands, and fans of the show moved in grand style through key parts of the city.

But this wasn’t just for show. The convoy made a powerful stop at the Kaneshie Polyclinic, where a past Di Asa Queen led a generous donation of medical supplies and essential items to the facility — a touching reminder of the show’s commitment to community impact beyond entertainment.

The float is set to climax at the Trust Sports Emporium (Bukom Boxing Arena) where the Atinka Banku Party is in full swing. There, guests are being treated to endless bowls of Ghana’s beloved local dish — Banku — with yellow and white maize dough flying out of giant pots faster than they can be served.

The official launch of Di Asa Season 9 — Ghana’s premier reality show for plus-size women continues after the Banku Party.
Known for its infectious energy, cultural pride, and celebration of body positivity, this season promises to raise the bar once again.

If today’s float is any indication, Di Asa isn’t just a show. It’s a movement — one that dances, gives, feeds, and unites.

Zoomlion Responds to Public Concerns Over YEA Contract, Affirms Commitment Despite Payment Delays

Waste management giant Zoomlion Ghana Limited has responded to growing public interest and media commentary regarding its long-standing contract with the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), reaffirming its commitment to sanitation, job creation, and national development despite facing over a year of delayed payments from government.

In a press statement, Zoomlion clarified the terms of its engagement under the Youth in Sanitation Module, which began in 2006 with the then Ministry of Youth and Sports under the National Youth Employment Programme (now YEA). Under this agreement, Zoomlion supervises and manages youth beneficiaries recruited by the YEA for public cleaning services across the country.

The company explained that each beneficiary is paid GHS 850, out of which GHS 258 is allocated as allowance to the beneficiary and GHS 592 covers management services including logistics, PPE, training, and administrative costs. The contract also requires Zoomlion to pre-finance beneficiary payments pending quarterly government reimbursements.

However, consistent delays in these payments have significantly strained the company’s operations.

“Despite not receiving payment for over a year, Zoomlion continues to operate across the country in fulfilment of its mandate,” the statement noted.

The company has since called for interest payments on delayed reimbursements, citing loss of value due to the wait.

Zoomlion emphasized its broader impact, highlighting the creation of over 200,000 jobs along the waste management value chain, the development of 36 waste treatment facilities, and its continued push for higher allowances for beneficiaries.

The company further reaffirmed its transparency by stating that it submits quarterly and annual reports to the YEA as required.

While expressing gratitude to Ghanaians and government stakeholders, Zoomlion acknowledged the support of President John Dramani Mahama, and called for continued collaboration to achieve the vision of a clean, green, and healthy Ghana.

NPP Flagbearership: “No one can stop me from contesting” – Kennedy Agyapong

Kennedy Agyapong

Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has announced his intention to contest for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer position ahead of the 2028 general elections.

His declaration follows a decision to formally withdraw from the party’s ongoing “Thank You” tour, citing security concerns after an attack involving one of his contracted groups in Kumasi.

The incident, which occurred at the Bantama Pentecost Church during a party event, involved a stabbing of a Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) student who was part of Unity Hall’s Jama group. The group had been engaged by Agyapong’s team to perform at the event.

Speaking to the media, Agyapong expressed concern over what he described as a growing threat to the safety of his supporters and team members. However, he remained resolute in his political ambition.

“… But we will regroup and at the appropriate time, come out stronger. I’m using this opportunity to make it clear that I will contest. Nobody can stop me from contesting because we have contributed to this party from the beginning.”

Agyapong’s comments come amid heightened internal tensions within the NPP, with several factions emerging ahead of the next leadership contest.

Engage Bawumia and Ken Groups to Foster Unity – NPP’s Bright Essilfie Kumi Advises

Bright Essilfie

Former National Organizer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Chairman of the Diaspora Mobilization Team in Pennsylvania, USA, Bright Essilfie Kumi, has charged party leadership to prioritize unity and grassroots mobilization if the NPP hopes to recapture power in 2028.

Speaking on Atinka TV’s Oman Mu Nsem show hosted by Nana Owoahene Acheampong, Mr. Kumi stated that despite losing the 2024 elections, the NPP remains Ghana’s best alternative, with many Ghanaians already missing its governance just four months after the transition.

He believes that the party can win the 2028 general election if internal cracks are sealed and unity is restored, particularly among supporters of the two main presidential hopefuls in the last primaries—Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Kennedy Agyapong.

Mr. Kumi urged the party’s leadership to “ginger the base and bring the story back,” emphasizing that disconnection from the grassroots was a key factor in the party’s 2024 defeat. He added that while the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration made significant progress, internal frustrations, neglect, and poor communication cost the party support.

He cautioned against any attempt to impose candidates on the party ahead of the 2028 flagbearership contest. “The power lies with the delegates, not party executives or power brokers. Let the process work,” he emphasized.

However, he proposed reforms to the party’s internal electoral structure, calling for a broader voting base. “Every card-bearing NPP member should have the right to vote in leadership elections. The current system of limited delegate voting is outdated and undemocratic,” he noted.

On the ongoing tensions between supporters of Dr. Bawumia and Kennedy Agyapong, Mr. Kumi called for immediate reconciliation and an end to internal hostilities. “If we don’t bring these factions together, we risk another defeat,” he warned, urging national executives to keep a close eye on both camps to prevent further division.

He also advised against premature campaigning and provocative conduct by aspirants, calling on party elders to maintain order as the race for 2028 leadership gathers pace.

Mr. Kumi hinted at his own political ambition, revealing that he plans to contest for the position of National First Vice Chairman. “We must elect results-driven, sellable leaders who can win elections—not just those with money or talk. I am ready to serve and help rebuild this party,” he said.

He further advocated for equal distribution of responsibilities among the party’s vice chairpersons to maximize their impact in rebuilding and mobilizing support across the country.

“Let’s rebuild now, from polling station to national, with unity and purpose. Only then can we return to power in 2028,” he concluded.

Start Reconciliation from Polling Stations Level – Bright Essilfie urges NPP

Bright Essilfie

A former National Organizer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and ex-Chairman of the party’s Diaspora Mobilization Team in Pennsylvania, USA, Bright Essilfie Kumi, has called on the leadership of the party to begin a comprehensive reconciliation and rebuilding process from the polling station level up to the national front.

Speaking in the wake of the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections on Atinka TV’s “Oman Mu Nsem” show hosted by Nana Owoahene Acheampong, Bright Essilfie Kumi stated that while the NPP managed only 41.61% in the presidential polls, all hope is not lost—provided the party undertakes deep introspection and reforms.

According to him, many grassroots members and loyalists were neglected during the party’s time in power, which contributed significantly to its electoral misfortunes. “We always say we have the men, but those men are not given the space to operate. Political hatred, exclusion, and failure to reshuffle the government hurt the party,” he emphasized.

The former diaspora chair, who has been an active member of the NPP since 1996 and has held various leadership roles both in Ghana and abroad, advised that reconciliation and unity must start from the base.

“Committees should be set up to listen to party members and find lasting solutions. Let’s not repeat our mistakes,” – he warned.

He also criticized the monetization of internal party elections, saying it has corrupted the selection process at all levels—from polling stations to national leadership. “Politics in Ghana has become an auction. Positions go to the highest bidder, not the most competent. This has weakened the very foundation of our party,” he lamented.

Touching on the role of youth in the party, Mr. Essilfie Kumi expressed concern about the marginalization of TESCON and other volunteer groups who play vital roles during election campaigns. He advocated for proper funding and voting rights for all 15 TESCON branches in national party decisions. “The party depends on them every election cycle, yet we neglect them afterwards. That must stop.”

ALSO READ: Kantamanto Market Fire: Leadership Renders Account, Declares Market Fully Operational

He further called on the NPP to maintain a national development agenda that transcends partisan politics. “We need a progressive national plan that prioritizes Ghana, not just political gains. We must build a party database to track and reward loyal contributors,” he added.

The former diaspora chairman also noted that the party leadership failed to respond to warning signs of decline. “The NPP was heading into opposition three years ago, but no one listened. There must be a national monitoring mechanism to identify and resolve issues from the grassroots up.”

Mr. Essilfie concluded by urging the party to revisit its constitution and reform its internal processes, including how leaders are elected and how volunteer groups are integrated into the party’s broader vision.

“Let’s fix ourselves, listen to our people, and return to power stronger and united,” he said.
