Namoale fires NPP over death of kidney patients after spending $10m on primaries

Namoale

A former Member of Parliament for La Dadekotopon, Nii Amasah Namoale, has expressed disappointment over the alleged death of 19 kidney patients following the closure of the Renal Dialysis Unit of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

His comments follows the closure of the unit and allegations that 19 persons had died since the closure.

In May 2023, the Unit was closed to outpatients, forcing them to seek dialysis service at private facilities.

According to sources, the unit had closed to outpatients due to accumulated debt of about GH¢4million and lack of maintenance of its equipment for the dialysis.

In September 2023, the unit was partially opened to outpatients but the services were offered at an increased fee from GH¢380 to GH¢765.42.

This also caused a public uproar, forcing the unit to close again to outpatients after it was sent to parliament.

After public outcry, the Minister of Health directed that the unit be opened on Monday, November 6, 2023, but as at the time of filing the report, the unit was still closed.

Speaking on Atinka TV’s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ama Gyenfa Ofosu Darkwah, Nii Amasah Namoale alleged that two aspirants in the just ended New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries spent more than $10 Million on their campaigns.

He was of the view that the government could have settled the debt but was rather focused on how to retain power.

“Calculate GH¢400 and GH¢300, when you add it, it will be GHC700, multiplied by the number of delegates over $10 million, which is about GH¢120 million. So, because of GH¢ 4 Million, about 19 persons died, is it right? he quizzed.

He said it is the responsibility of the government to take care of persons who are sick irrespective of who they are, saying that if the government shirks its responsibilities to focus on how it will stay in power and neglect those who are ill, then it is a disgrace.
