Affirmative Action: NETRIGHT urges Ghanaians to support new law

The Convener of the Network for Women’s Rights in Ghana (NETRIGHT), Prof. Akosua Darkwah, has called on Ghanaians to actively engage in the process of ensuring the President signs the Affirmative Action Bill into law.

Speaking on Atinka TV’s Morning Show, “Ghana Nie”, hosted by Bernard Lav, Prof. Darkwah emphasized the importance of public involvement in this significant legislative step.

Prof. Darkwah expressed confidence that President Nana Akufo-Addo, the ECOWAS Champion on Gender, will assent to the bill.
She highlighted his track record and commitment to gender equality within the ECOWAS region as a positive indicator.

Addressing journalists directly, Prof. Darkwah urged them to begin practicing the principles of the law by ensuring equal gender representation on their platforms. She stressed the media’s role in promoting gender parity and setting a precedent for other sectors to follow.

In response to criticisms that the law could potentially place women ahead of men, Prof. Darkwah dismissed these concerns, stating, “Even if that happens, what’s wrong with that? Men have been ahead of us for decades.”

The Affirmative Action Bill, a landmark piece of legislation aimed at promoting gender equality in Ghana, mandates equal representation of women in various sectors, including politics, public service, and corporate boards.
The bill has been hailed as a significant step towards addressing the longstanding gender imbalance in the country.

Her remarks underline the necessity of the Affirmative Action Bill in leveling the playing field and fostering true gender equality in Ghana.

The passage of the Affirmative Action Bill marks a historic moment for Ghana, setting a precedent for other African nations to follow in the pursuit of gender equality.
