Affirmative Action Bill a landmark victory for gender equity – SEND GHANA

SEND Ghana has expressed its elation over the recent passage of the Affirmative Action Bill by the Parliament of Ghana on July 31st, 2024.

The organization extended congratulations to women’s groups and civil society activists for their relentless dedication and persistent advocacy that culminated in this significant achievement.

In a statement signed by the Chief Executive Officer, Siapha Kamara, SEND Ghana SEND Ghana commended Parliament for its bold move in passing the Bill into law after decades of deliberations and scrutiny.

This milestone is seen as a progressive step towards achieving gender equity and empowering women across all sectors of Ghanaian society.

The journey toward the passage of this bill has been long and arduous. Initiated in 1998, the process has undergone extensive deliberation and consultation, reflecting the diverse voices and perspectives of Ghanaians, particularly women’s groups and civil society organizations that have been at the forefront of this movement.

The Affirmative Action Bill is seen as essential for increasing women’s participation in important positions and leadership roles at all levels of governance.

Historically, the low participation of women in decision-making roles and many significant spheres of Ghanaian society has been a persistent issue.

Despite making up about 50.7% of Ghana’s population, women are often not equitably represented at decision-making tables and other critical areas of national life. Systemic barriers and cultural norms have historically hindered their full involvement.

Currently, women constitute less than 15% of Ghana’s 275-member parliament, falling short of the UN target of 30%.

The Affirmative Action Bill mandates equal representation and aims for at least 30% female participation in decision-making processes.
This provision seeks to address gender imbalances and promote inclusive governance.

Once signed by the President, the Bill will tackle systemic barriers and enhance women’s participation in all spheres.

SEND Ghana has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to expedite the passage of this bill into law.

By doing so, the President would not only fulfill the aspirations of countless Ghanaians who have long advocated for gender equity but also set a powerful example of leadership and commitment to justice.

The organization urges swift and decisive action to make this transformative legislation a reality, reinforcing Ghana’s dedication to equality and inclusive progress for all its citizens.
