The President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo has convinced organised labour to hold on with its planned nationwide.

This is due to the dire consequences the strike could have on the country’s economy.

Organised labour threatened to embark on a nationwide strike on October 10, 2024 over the galamsey menace.

In September, Organised Labour called on the government to declare a state of emergency on all mining activities whether legal or illegal and find proper ways mining can be done without destroying Ghana’s water bodies and forest.

It gave the President an ultimatum up to September 30 after which it will take a drastic decision.

Despite the threats, organised labour and the entire nation is yet to see the President take a drastic measure to halt galamsey.

In a latest development, organised labour made it known of its intended strike.

This was when government called on them to a meeting on 3 October 2024, at the Jubilee House
to have a dialogue concerning the matter.

In a statement, Government thanked Organized Labour for attending the meeting upon the President’s invitation.

“Government is committed to engaging all stakeholders in pursuit of sustainable mining and environmental protection,” the Presidency stated.
