TMA suspends member for raising issues over siting of proposed project

The Tema Metropolitan Assembly is under fire following its decision to suspend an assembly member for a year, without any fair hearing.

Residents of Horticulture Electoral Area in Tema, are up in arms against the TMA for suspending Babatunde Lasisi, who only raised issues about a supposed deal between the assembly and an Indian investor for the construction of a supposed hospital in his area.

The said land which had been earmarked for offices of the DVLA, is alleged to have been handed over to Kingdom Exim Group of companies by the assembly to build a hospital.

This led to some agitations by the youths of the area, who chased out some workers on site. The development is said to have pushed the Public Relations and Compliance Committee (PRC) of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly, to suspend the assembly member for the area, on grounds of inciting the youth against the project.

However, Babatunde Lasisi, said his one year suspension by the PRCC, is not only politically motivated, but a calculated attempt by the assembly to push the said project without taking into consideration its viability and impact to the area.

He said the failure of the said investor to produce a blueprint on the project also goes a long way to confirm residents’ fears that, the project in question is not that of a hospital.

Meanwhile some youths of the area, have threatened a show down at the TMA if their assembly member is not reinstated by the close of Thursday October 29.

Leader of the youth, Francis Asumadu, warned they will make life unbearable for persons behind the suspension of their assembly member since they are saboteurs to the development of Horticulture Electoral Area.
