A National Communications Member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Peter Akwasi Mensah says President Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo Addo’s review of the Free SHS, NABCO and other policies means that he will cancel them.

His comments come after the NPP- Government stated that it will review about 16 flagship programmes including the Free SHS and NABCO.

Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah announced that all the 16 flagship programmes of the government including the free senior high school (SHS) programme will be reviewed.

He said the president wants the programmes to be protected and fully implemented to impact the lives of all Ghanaians.

“All the 16 flagship programmes are up to be looked at. The President has directed that the flagship programmes should be protected and fully implemented to ensure that the impact is achieved.”

Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta in 2018 also suggested a review of the programme to make parents who are in the position to afford paying the fees to do so.

Speaking on Atinka TV‘s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ekourba Gyasi Simpremu, Mr Peter Akwasi Mensah recalled that when the implementation of the Free SHS policy began, most parents complained about the double track system and others.

During that time, he said the Ex President, John Mahama in his capacity as a Statesman recommended that the Free SHS Policy be reviewed and went further to suggest that the policy will be reviewed in the first 100 days if NDC won power in 2024.

However, in response to that, Mr Peter Akwasi Mensah said President Akufo Addo said Mr Mahama’s review of the policy meant that he will cancel it.

Due to this, Mr Peter Akwasi Mensah also said the review means the President will cancel the policy based on his own comments he made in 2019 December.

“Based on what President Akufo Addo said, the review means they will cancel free SHS, they will cancel NABCO, they will cancel Planting for food according to their own statement,” he said.
